we keep hearing the term "cinematic" thrown around in reference to wedding videography. it's kinda hard for me not to chuckle a little when i hear this. the term cinematic can mean different things to different people. to me the term references a style of narrative story telling. you have cast and crew and with the magic of motion pictures you create a cinematic experience. this is the exact opposite of what we are trying to accomplish on a wedding day. i prefer to call what we do "artistic" story telling. from a technical perspective a cinematic look is achieved using a camera filming at 24 frames per second and proper shutter speed to get that motion blur we are accustomed to seeing on the big screen. proper lens selection to achieve a shallow depth of field also enhances the cinematic look. while these are techniques we use and certainly spare no expense to get the highest level of production value i don't believe this is what people are referring to when they use the term "cinematic". they are describing the way the film is edited and the types of shots used to capture the event. techniques like using a steadicam, slider, racking focus provides those details that visually enhance the story. and for us, that's what it's all about. telling your story in an artistic way that fits you. if you want to call it "cinematic" that's fine with me.
